Florida State University has named Joan M. Schenkel as the new Associate Vice President for Research Administration.

A seasoned executive with over two decades of experience in higher education research administration, Schenkel joins FSU to bolster the university’s research infrastructure and support its continued growth as a top-tier research institution. She succeeds Kerry Peluso, who has served in the role since 2017 and is retiring.

“We are incredibly pleased to welcome Joan to Florida State University,” said Vice President for Research Stacey S. Patterson. “Joan’s deep expertise in the research lifecycle — from pre-award strategy to post-award compliance — will be invaluable as we continue to expand our research footprint and drive innovation.”

Schenkel comes to Florida State after a 20-year career at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU). Most recently, she served as the Associate Vice President for Research in the Office of Research and Technology Management, where she played a pivotal role in managing a research enterprise of $642 million.

At CWRU, she was instrumental in leading digital transformation initiatives, including the implementation of upgraded enterprise software solutions to reduce administrative burdens and improve workflow transparency.

“I am passionate about helping position universities so that researchers can do their best work and make the important discoveries and breakthroughs,” Schenkel said. “I look forward to collaborating with the talented faculty and staff at Florida State University to optimize our research operations and support the groundbreaking work being done across campus.”

Schenkel holds a Master of Science in Curriculum & Instruction from McDaniel College and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Dickinson College. She starts at Florida State on April 28.

Students at Florida State University fused human creativity with modern technology during a recent 24-hour Create-a-thon. The design sprint, hosted by FSU’s Innovation Hub, challenged participants to celebrate Tallahassee’s community spirit by building interactive experiences that cultivate a lasting sense of belonging and connection.

The event served as a feature of the 2026 Festival of the Creative Arts (FCA), an initiative led by the FSU Office of Research that highlights the voices and talents of students and faculty across the university.

“Events like this Create-a-thon provide our students with a space where creativity is the primary driver of discovery,” said Ken Baldauf, founding director of the Innovation Hub. “When we bring together dancers, engineers, musicians, writers and scientists, we aren’t just making art, we are developing a universal language for problem solving that leverages the latest technologies.”

While most people view walking as a simple means to get from point A to point B, a recent interdisciplinary lecture at Florida State University suggests that traveling on foot is an essential act that defines our relationship with the world.

Co-presented by the Milton S. Carothers Faculty Lecture Series and the Festival of the Creative Arts, “The Art of Walking” brought together scholars from across the university to discuss the practice of “flânerie,” or the art of urban strolling.

Held in the Bradley Reading Room of Robert Manning Strozier Library, the event offered a deep dive into how the simple act of walking shapes social identity and urban policy. FSU’s First Lady Dr. Jai Vartikar kicked off the afternoon’s program, welcoming attendees and highlighting the importance of the arts and humanities in sparking these interdisciplinary conversations.

The conversation featured Aimée Boutin, a professor of French in the College of Arts and Sciences and Meaghan McSorley, an assistant professor of Urban and Regional Planning in the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy.

Boutin, an expert in 19th-century French studies, opened the lecture by exploring the history of the flâneur. She described the kaleidoscopic encounters of figures in French literature who wandered through Paris, treating the sights and sounds of the city as a “sensory feast.”

“The flâneur does not merely navigate space; they read the city like a living text, capturing the ephemeral beauty and social friction that define the urban experience,” Boutin said.

Florida State University will spotlight the growing field of medical humanities during the Arts-Health-Humanities Symposium VI 12-2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at FSU’s Claude Pepper Center.

The symposium involves faculty and students — from design, medicine, music education, music therapy and musicology — carrying conversations about current research and future interdisciplinary collaborations. It is part of the Festival of the Creative Arts, an annual campuswide event hosted by FSU’s Office of Research that features creative and innovative voices that span across university disciplines.

Tuesday’s symposium, a fusion of arts and medicine, includes FSU Associate Professor of Medical Humanities Tana Jean Welch, a poet and scholar of contemporary American poetry and medical humanities. In her field, she shows how reading and writing poetry, all forms of creative writing, can benefit those in the high-stress medical field.

Welch says that poetry echoes the human experience, drawing countless parallels between what is written and what is felt.

“Poetry’s use of blank space, collage, ambiguity, and fragmented language echoes our embodied experience in many ways,” Welch said. “The meaning of a poem, just like the meaning of a body, can shift from reader to reader or from day to day — in this way, poetry can be a truer representation of the body and bodily health. The way we feel in our bodies — emotionally, physically, psychologically — is constantly changing as our bodies encounter other bodies. Poetry provides space for variation.”

Welch teaches courses in literature, writing and humanities and serves as the director of the Chapman Humanities and Arts in Medicine Program (CHAMP), seeking to enhance the intellectual and emotional environment at the FSU College of Medicine through extracurricular arts and humanities programming.

She is also the managing editor for a journal called “HEAL: Humanism Evolving through Arts and Literature.” In the seasonal journal doctors, students and patients share stories, painting and poems about their lives in the medical world. Welch believes tapping into this creativity helps medical professionals in their everyday work.

“Creative and reflective writing is important for anyone in any field,” Welch said. “It is a critical thinking tool — the act of writing can reveal hitherto unknown knowledge and emotions. Searching for the right words forces us to think deeper. This can be quite valuable in the medical profession.”

How can poetry be interconnected to medicine and healing?

Another important connection between poetry, health and illness comes when one considers the task of poetry. Poetry’s purpose is to express the ineffable, to say what cannot be said any other way. There is much about our health that is difficult to communicate, including what pain feels like, what the body is experiencing, or the emotional feelings that accompany pain and illness. Poetry can bring us that much closer to feeling what someone else is feeling, thus, bringing us closer to empathy, connection and understanding. Poetry can help us articulate the complexity of life and help us change the language we use to construct conditions of health and illness.

In your work you discuss “the human entanglement.” What does it mean and why is it so important?

It is impossible to maintain opposition or separation between the human body and everything else. For example, one cannot speak of human health as independent from ecosystem health. Health is also not independent from economics or politics, weather or location, or a million other material or cultural entities. Recognition of our bodily entanglement reduces the emphasis placed on individual choice, and individual value, as health outcome predictors, while also encouraging us to acknowledge our kinship with all others. This recognition is vital for achieving true health equity.

How do your areas of focus benefit those working in the medical profession?

As the founder of the narrative medicine movement, Dr. Rita Charon, notes, ‘When health professionals write, in whatever genre and diction they choose, about clinical experiences, they as a matter of course discover aspects of the experience that, until writing, were not evident to them.’ Writing about a clinical experience offers providers a place to reflect on what could’ve been done differently, or what worked well. This speaks directly to HEAL’s primary mission — to serve as a venue for medical students and healthcare professionals to reflect and discover. HEAL also publishes narratives written by patients about their healthcare experiences to expand the perspectives available to our students and community. Our capacity for empathy is enlarged both when we read someone else’s story and when we write about our role in someone else’s life.

Florida State University’s Office of Research will host the 2026 Festival of the Creative Arts, a campuswide event that highlights the voices, talents and creativity of FSU faculty and students in February and early March.

Departments from across campus will celebrate the innovation and creative excellence that results from combining various modes of expression and disciplines.

“Each year, the Festival of the Creative Arts celebrates interdisciplinary engagement across campus with events that include faculty and student participation,” said Iain Quinn, festival director and FSU’s Research Fellow in the arts and humanities. “In addition to ongoing research conversations that develop from one festival to another, there are also new collaborations and multiple first performances.”

Several events are offered for K-12 students and families, including “It’s the Weather!” at the Challenger Learning Center of Tallahassee on Saturday, Feb. 7. There will also be a premiere of a new performance work involving digital art and music.

“It’s an excellent opportunity to learn about the historic and contemporary connections between art and science with multiple hands-on activities,” Quinn said. “The festival is always a special opportunity for everyone to be inspired by the creative spirit that defines FSU.”

In a move to bolster Florida State University’s rapidly expanding research enterprise, Vice President for Research Stacey S. Patterson has announced the promotion of Jenn Garye to Assistant Vice President for Research Business Strategy and Operations.

“Jenn’s leadership, insight and unwavering dedication to our university have been instrumental in advancing our research operations,” Patterson said. “Her extensive experience has made her a go-to resource across FSU. In her new role, Jenn will continue to elevate our research infrastructure and foster the collaboration essential to achieving FSU’s ambitious research goals. We look forward to her leadership as we continue to grow our research enterprise.”

Garye, who has served FSU for nearly two decades, joined the Division of Research in 2015, serving as Director of Business Operations. In this role, she has provided guidance on policy development, compliance and business process improvements that have benefited research administration across campus. Her earlier roles at FSU include positions in the Department of Biological Science and FSU Athletics.

As Assistant Vice President, Garye provides strategic leadership in all areas of research business operations, including administrative services, fiscal management, procurement, human resources, reporting and business planning. Garye’s vision, expertise and dedication will further enhance FSU business processes and strengthen the support provided to faculty and staff across the university.

“I’m honored and excited to continue serving the FSU community in the role of Assistant Vice President for Research Business Strategy and Operations,” Garye said. “It’s incredibly rewarding to witness the growth of research and discovery at FSU. I’m committed to strengthening the processes and systems that empower our faculty and staff to push the boundaries of discovery and innovation as we advance FSU’s research mission.”

Garye is a two-time graduate of Florida State University. In 2019, she was honored with the Gabor Award, which recognizes employees who have made outstanding contributions to the university’s effectiveness and efficiency. She also serves on numerous national committees through the National Council of University Research Administration and the Federal Demonstration Partnership.

Florida State University Vice President for Research Stacey S. Patterson has been named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, an honor that is nationally recognized as the highest professional distinction awarded to academic inventors.

“This prestigious recognition is a testament to Dr. Patterson’s remarkable track record of innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit,” said FSU President Richard McCullough. “Dr. Patterson’s dedication to advancing research and turning ideas into impactful solutions has inspired our entire university community. I’m proud to call her my colleague and celebrate this achievement.”

NAI Fellows are selected based on demonstrating a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society.

Patterson, who has served as FSU’s Vice President for Research since 2022, has a long record of bridging the gap between academia and industry. She holds several U.S. patents that focus on novel detection platforms and engineered cell lines used to accelerate drug discovery and toxicity testing. Her work also led to 490 BioTech, a Knoxville-based startup company, where she was one of four co-founders. 490 BioTech was named one of the top ten innovations in 2013 by The Scientist Magazine.

“Being named a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors is an incredible honor,” Patterson said. “I firmly believe that our responsibility as academic innovators extends beyond discovery — we must actively translate the knowledge and breakthroughs developed within our universities into real-world solutions to help improve lives. This part of our mission inspires me daily, driving my passion to ensure that our researchers and ideas create meaningful, lasting benefits for society.”

At FSU, Patterson oversees the university’s $487 million research operation. This includes spearheading a revamp of the university’s commercialization efforts and securing a $6 million National Science Foundation grant, IGNITE-FSU, to accelerate translational research with market potential.

She has also led the development of FSU’s first-ever research strategic plan, ASPIRE, and been instrumental in the development of FSU Health and InSPIRE, a dynamic manufacturing and aerospace initiative in Northwest Florida funded by a $98.4 million Triumph Gulf Coast award.

Prior to coming to FSU, Patterson served as Vice President for Research, Outreach, and Economic development of the University of Tennessee system, where she helped lead a number of large center-type initiatives including the creation of the Composites Institute, a $259 million public-private partnership involving more than 130 member institutions from industry, academia, and government collaborating on the nation’s advanced composites ecosystem. She also led the creation of the UT-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute and helped to secure over $100 million in public and private support for its launch including a $36.4 million grant from the Department of Energy.

The NAI Fellows program was established in 2012 to recognize and honor academic, government, and non-profit research institute inventors for their contributions to society. This year’s class includes 169 U.S. distinguished academic and institutional inventors and 16 International Fellows.

“NAI Fellows are a driving force within the innovation ecosystem, and their contributions across scientific disciplines are shaping the future of our world,” said Paul R. Sanberg, President of the National Academy of Inventors. “We are thrilled to welcome this year’s class of Fellows to the Academy. Earlier this month, the Learning Systems Institute (LSI) at Florida State University partnered with the World Bank and the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to host Educators Shaping Futures: A Global Knowledge Exchange on Teacher Preparation and Development. 

The event, which took place Nov. 3-4 at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa Conference Center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, aimed to address the worldwide shortage of qualified teachers. More than 340 policymakers, teacher educators, researchers and practitioners from 41 countries convened to raise awareness and build coalitions for change to ensure that teachers everywhere are prepared and supported to succeed in their crucial roles.  

Steve McDowell, FSU’s assistant provost for International Initiatives, delivered opening remarks for the conference Monday, Nov. 3, alongside H.E. Kora Tushune, state minister for Higher Education in Ethiopia; Maryam Salim, division director of Eritrea, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Sudan at the World Bank; Ambassador Jiang Feng, head of China’s Mission to the African Union; and Quentin Wodon, director of UNESCO’s International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa.

“At Florida State University, we recognize that the challenges and opportunities facing education today are global in scope,” McDowell said. “We know that the future of education depends on strong partnerships — across borders, disciplines and sectors. Together, we can address the evolving needs of learners, support the professional growth of teachers and build educational systems that are inclusive, resilient and globally connected.”

Children and youth — the Floridians of the future — were the focus of a recent Florida State University event that united faculty around shared interests for interdisciplinary research. 

FSU’s Research Development staff hosted the recent Collaborative Collision seminar as part of FSU Discovery Days. Attendees were invited to consider the diverse experiences that shape childhood and to form partnerships that advance research dedicated to their well-being. 

“This event is meant to bring together research champions from across disciplines to further enhance FSU’s positive impact on young people in our communities,” said Nicole Viverito, ORD program director. “Regardless of the field of study, our researchers are dedicated to improving the lives of children and youth through evidence-based programs and services.”

FSU held the first ever Clinical Catalyst as part of the 2025 Discovery Days, an event to bring together local clinical providers with researchers to find evidence-based solutions to pressing challenges in health and health care.

“There’s so much opportunity in this community for collaboration,” said Vice President for Research Stacey S. Patterson. “We have all the parts. This is just the first step in bringing everyone together.”

The event featured a panel discussion about the value of researcher and clinician collaboration with Dr. Gilbert Chandler from Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic, Professor of Medicine Andrew Kozel, FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Assistant Professor Taylor Higgins and Associate Professor of Fine Arts Amy Huber. Then, 12 clinicians from throughout the region gave two-minute snapshots about the challenges they face in their practices.

Topics included mastectomy garments, pregnancy misinformation in social media, pacemaker complications, post-surgery stroke complications, trauma referral from rural areas, ER visits, same-day triage, team-based care, Parkinson’s disease and driving, and end-of-life care.
