Damon Andrew, dean of the Florida State University Anne Spencer Daves College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, begins his first term as president-elect of the American Kinesiology Association (AKA) this week.

Andrew serves as president-elect in the 2025-26 year, followed by a term as president of the AKA in the 2026-27 year. Previously, he served as a member of the association’s board of directors from 2022-25.

The AKA’s purpose is to promote and enhance kinesiology as a unified field of study and advance its many professional applications. AKA does this by advocating for kinesiology at national and international levels as well as by supporting its member departments by providing resource materials and leadership and educational opportunities for university administrators in kinesiology.

“Being chosen to serve as president-elect of the American Kinesiology Association is truly an honor, made all the more special by being elected by my respected peers and colleagues,” Andrew said. “FSU has grown to national prominence in the field of kinesiology, and I view this honor as not just a personal accomplishment, but as a reflection on the exceptional research and impact FSU faculty and students have made. I look forward to this leadership opportunity.”

Andrew recently received the most prestigious award given by the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM), earning the 2025 Earle F. Zeigler Lecture Award. The award is bestowed upon an individual who has made significant contributions to sport management through scholarship, research and leadership.

Through Andrew’s leadership, Anne’s College was named the best of its kind in Florida by U.S. News & World Report in 2024. He has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, reviews, proceedings and book chapters, and received 31 funded grants and contracts totaling more than $2.5 million.

Through his time as a member of the AKA, Andrew has made presentations at the association’s annual conference including topics such as innovation and entrepreneurship in a time of shrinking budgets, building external support, increasing visibility and enhancing development activity, and the field of sport management and its value in kinesiology.

Florida State University’s Damon Andrew has received the most prestigious award given by the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM).

Andrew, an expert in the field of sport management who serves as dean of the Anne Spencer Daves College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, was named the recipient of the 2025 Earle F. Zeigler Lecture Award by NASSM. The award is bestowed upon an individual who has made significant contributions to sport management through scholarship, research and leadership.

As part of the award, Andrew will deliver a special lecture at the NASSM annual conference, which will then be published in the Journal of Sport Management. The award will be formally presented at a ceremony in May.

“I am truly honored to receive the Earle F. Zeigler Lecture Award from NASSM,” Andrew said. “Looking at the list of previous recipients, it is humbling to see my name beside giants in the field of sport management. This achievement inspires me to continue making an impact in sport management and higher education.”

NASSM was founded in 1985 with the mission to promote, encourage and stimulate the study, research, scholarship and professional development of sport management professionals. A member of NASSM may only win the Earle F. Zeigler Lecture Award once during their career, and it is considered a great honor to be selected.

Some of Andrew’s notable achievements include publishing a research methods and design textbook; receiving 31 funded grants and contracts totaling more than $2.5 million; and authoring more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, reviews, proceedings and book chapters. Andrew previously received the Garth Paton Distinguished Service Award from NASSM.

As dean of Anne’s College since 2018, Andrew has led the college to new heights, including the creation of new academic programs, faculty lines and funding opportunities. These achievements culminated in the college being named the best of its kind in Florida by U.S. News & World Report in 2024.

Florida State University College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences Dean Damon Andrew recently received the 2024 Garth Paton Distinguished Service Award from the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM). The award is among the most prestigious given by the leading sport management organization.

“I am honored to join the list of the many distinguished individuals who have received the Garth Paton Distinguished Service Award,” Andrew said. “So many past recipients of this award have mentored me along my academic journey, and I am so grateful to be recognized by an organization I so deeply cherish and respect.”

Dr. Jim Weese, former dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Western University, delivered introductory remarks during the ceremony on June 1 in Minneapolis, in which he cited Andrew’s prodigious scholarly publishing and administrative successes.

“Over the past 22 years, he has served our organization exceptionally well,” Weese said. “He got involved very early in his time with NASSM, serving on ad hoc committees, including the strategic planning committee, the research fellow selection committee, and the governance committee.” In total, Andrew served 10 years on the NASSM executive board, including his time as editor of the Sport Management Education Journal and his elected appointments as member-at large and president of NASSM.

The Garth Paton Distinguished Service Award recognizes a member of NASSM in good standing who has shown high distinction within the organization and at the recipient’s academic institution. Winners are chosen for their service to NASSM and professional contribution to fellow members and contribution to the field of sport management.

Damon Andrew serves as dean and professor of the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences at his alma mater, Florida State University.

With a history that traces back to 1905, the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences is the oldest in Florida and includes the Department of Educational Leadership & Policy Studies, Department of Educational Psychology & Learning Systems, Department of Human Development and Family Science, Department of Health, Nutrition and Food Sciences, Department of Sport Management, School of Teacher Education, and three laboratory schools (Florida State University School, FSU Pembroke Pines Charter School and The Collegiate School at FSU Panama City).
