This message to all students, faculty and staff has been approved by FSU President Richard McCullough.
Dear FSU Community,
As I reflect on the first several weeks of my presidency, I would like to address some matters that are important to me and the future of our university.
Advancing diversity, equity and inclusion on campus is among my top priorities. Florida State University has made great strides in improving the campus climate in recent years, but it’s become clear to me that we have work to do to ensure that every student, faculty and staff member feels respected, safe and valued.
There have been a few incidents this fall that are antithetical to the values that Florida State University holds dear. I abhor racism and discrimination, and it has no place here.
Earlier this week, flyers were posted in the Collegetown area, including a flyer referencing a hate group that was posted near Hillel. These flyers were offensive, hateful and unacceptable. We want the FSU community to know that our investigation identified the people responsible, and we can report that they have no affiliation with the university. There was never a credible threat to Hillel or our Jewish and Black communities.
I also have met with Black student leaders to continue an important dialogue and am available to meet with Black faculty and other groups. In addition, we have held campus listening sessions and are working with student groups to promote better understanding, respect and communication.
I am reviewing the findings and recommendations made by the Anti-Racism, Equity and Inclusion Task Force. I have met with Professor Maxine Montgomery, who chaired the task force, and the university’s chief diversity officer, and we are continuing to implement many of these initiatives.
In the meantime, I ask that we each do our part to embrace civility and respect. One of the reasons I came to Florida State was its strong sense of family and welcoming environment. Together, I know that we can continue to build a more inclusive community for everyone.
Sincerely,
|
